They assumed we were sisters, even though we looked nothing alike. Me, pale and dark, you red-haired and freckled. We allowed them their error, because it made life simpler.

They assumed we were spinsters, even though we spent a lifetime together. No man entered our lives, that is true, but the vows we spoke to each other meant more than any church ceremony. I wore your token on a chain around my neck, beneath my bodice and you wore mine.

They assumed we were witches, even though the only knowledge we had came from book learning, from research. Herbal remedies and suggestions to keep illness at bay. They came at sunset with their torches and barricaded us into the home we'd spent our years tending. We held hands and I prayed the smoke would smother you first, so I did not have to hear you scream.

They assumed that was the end, sifting through the ashes at the end of it all. But true love, the love we had, burns forever.
